Pope names five new cardinals, all from outside Italy and the Vatican
By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis is to elevate five Roman Catholic prelates from outside Italy and the Vatican to the rank of cardinal, the elite group of churchmen who are his closest advisers and can enter a conclave to choose his successor. The pope, making the surprise announcement during his weekly Sunday address, said the men came from Mali, Spain, Sweden, Laos and El Salvador. The fact that none of the five are Italian and none hold Vatican positions underscores Francis' conviction that the Church is a global institution that should become increasingly less Italian-centric.
Saudi minister confident of oil cut extension
Saudi Arabia's energy minister expressed confidence on Sunday of extending a global cut in oil production designed to boost prices. Khalid al-Falih spoke ahead of a meeting on Thursday between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Russia, where they are expected to extend the production cut pact. "We have full commitment from the Russian side, including President (Vladimir) Putin himself," Falih told reporters on the sidelines of summits between US President Donald Trump and Muslim leaders from around the world.
