Muslim communities have spearheaded a fundraising effort for the victims and their families who were affected by a stabbing on a train in Portland. Two men were killed and a third was injured after they tried to protect two women being verbally assaulted on a train by suspect Jeremy Christian. One of the women was wearing a hijab and Christian was reportedly yelling anti-Muslim remarks at them.
Portland police said the man accused of stabbing three men who tried to protect Muslim women from his racist slurs on a train could be a “domestic terrorist”. Jeremy Christian, 35, will appear in court this week for slitting the throats of two men and stabbing a third on a train after he verbally attacked two women, one of whom was wearing a hijab. “It's too early to say whether last night's violence was an act of domestic terrorism or a federal hate crime,” Renn Cannon, the special agent in charge of the FBI office in Portland, said.
China on Sunday denied the Pentagon's charge that an encounter between Chinese fighters and a US surveillance plane over the South China Sea was "unsafe and unprofessional". Tensions between the two economic superpowers have risen in recent years over the disputed waterway, which China claims almost in full despite counter-claims from other Asian nations. Chinese J-10 warplanes intercepted a US Navy P-3 that was operating in international airspace Wednesday, according to Pentagon spokesman Commander Gary Ross.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei launched a fierce attack against regional rival Saudi Arabia, saying it was being pumped "like a milking cow" by "infidel" Americans. "These people (the Saudis) appear to believe in the Koran... but in practice they act against its teachings," Khamenei said at a meeting on Saturday to mark the start of the holy month of Ramadan. "But in reality there is no closeness and, as the Americans have said, they are just there to pump them for money like a milking cow, and later slaughter them," he added.
